An extraordinary Japanese carved wooden and vermilion-lacquered round tray (bonki / marubon) created by the renowned workshop Hakkudō, one of the most prestigious lineages of Kamakura-bori craftsmanship.
The tray features a striking, deeply carved relief of a visage (suggestive of a wrathful deity such as Fudō Myōō or a guardian spirit) with stylized hair rising dramatically like wild flames or flowing locks. Executed with dynamic chisel strokes characteristic of Hakkudō’s sculptural style, it is finished in traditional arai-shu (washed vermilion) red lacquer over a dark underlayer, creating powerful contrast and tactile depth.
Technique: Kamakura-bori (Carved wood coated with layers of red and black urushi lacquer)
Design/Motif: Stylized face with flame-like hair (Fudō Myōō / Expressionistic deity motif)
Dimensions: Height: 4.3 cm | Diameter/Width: 35.0 cm
Condition: The tray itself is in pristine, undamaged condition. Accompanied by the original signed wooden box (tomobako); the lid of the box shows natural warping at the edges due to age.
Note: Guaranteed authentic work by Hakkudō. Exceptional sculptural presence suitable for tea ceremony display or modern craft collection.
