Born in Tokyo as the third son of a samurai from the Matsumoto clan.He formally trained under the legendary historical painting master Tomone Kobori.
A vital participant in the influential Koji-kai avant-garde art group alongside legendary figures Yukihiko Yasuda and Shikō Imamura.
He was a major, celebrated figure in the prestigious Teiten and Shin-Bunten national exhibitions. Kawabune is highly revered for inheriting and breathing modern life into the classical traditions of the Tosa school, specializing in historical figures (Rekishi-ga) and warriors (Musha-e).
