About the Master:
Born in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1952. Yamane Seigan is a unique figure in the world of modern Japanese ceramics. Notably, he holds a passionate background in traditional martial arts (Karate), an intense physical and spiritual discipline that directly influences the bold, energetic, and uncompromising strength felt in his pottery shapes.
In 1987, he embarked on a self-taught journey into the world of pottery, mastering the wheel independently and constructing his own kiln within a single year. Driven by an innate curiosity, he began researching unique glazes and special clay blends. By 1990, under the strong recommendation of a direct disciple of the legendary Yoshida Hagien, Seigan debuted his works at the 3rd Hagi Ceramic Art Festival to widespread acclaim, subsequently participating in the prestigious festival 13 times. He established his own renowned kiln, Kousai-an, and expanded his artistic research into revolutionary Ao-Hagi (Blue Hagi), expressive Oni-Hagi, and experimental glass-fused Kujaku styles, cementing his name among top modern Hagi artisans.
